Life Skills Students

During the week of November 20th, students in Traci Sharp's class planned their annual Friendsgiving Feast.

Students were first tasked with brainstorming what foods to serve.  The class shared what their family traditions were at home and from there, all voted for their favorite foods. Next, the students had to search for recipes online and make their grocery lists.

The class took a trip to Hy-Vee and learned how to shop for the best sale prices, stick to their shopping lists, and bag their groceries.

After the shopping was complete, the students spent the next two days preparing their feast. The desserts were prepared on the first day and then the students had to make a plan of which dishes they would need to cook in the oven, cook on the stove, or if the dish could be prepared in a crockpot. To complete this, they had to compare cooking times and temperatures to decide if items could be cooked in the oven together or not.

Students then followed the recipes and created their Friendsgiving dishes. To help with the decor, students also made a trip to Dollar Tree to purchase decorations for the feast. Each student chose three items for the festivities. Some students also chose to make decorations to use as the centerpieces for the tables.

The meal was a tremendous success this year, as it has also in the past, thanks to the dedication of the teachers and staff to provide a wonderful meal.
