While the nationwide Read Across America celebration officially kicks off next week, Second-grade students at Silas Willard Elementary School are already well on their way to becoming lifelong book lovers.
Through the Succeed to Read program, these young Silas Wildcats have turned their classrooms into hubs of literacy excitement. The program is designed to empower students by giving them the freedom to choose their own books from a curated selection of titles. This allows students to explore topics that interest them while ensuring materials are appropriate for their specific reading levels.
The process includes several interactive steps:
Book Selection: Students choose from pre-selected titles tailored to various reading abilities.
Comprehension Check: After finishing the book, students answer a set of specific questions to demonstrate their understanding of the story.
Celebrated Success: Once a student correctly completes the questions, they earn a sticker to place on a large progress chart, providing a visual and rewarding way to track their growth.
The program has demonstrated successful outcomes for the second-grade teachers over several years, and they remain committed to offering it to all students in the second grade.
